What is AMR

What is AMR

Antimicrobial-Resistant infections are those that have developed resistance to medications that were once effective at eradicating infection. The CDC reports that at least 2.8 million AMR infections occur each year in the USA. Estimates vary, but AMR is likely the third leading cause of death in the USA with numbers reaching as high as 165,000 yearly.

The Lancet has reported that globally almost 40 million people will die by the year 2050 of AMR infections. This data is the best-case scenario given no new Superinfections emerge in the next 25 years. Unfortunately, we are fairly confident that new superinfections will emerge causing the numbers of deaths to rise well above that 40 million number.

The United Nations held its high-level meeting on global AMR on September 26 & 27, 2024. The UN has created strong guidance for world leaders to follow and act upon to reduce the catastrophic impact of AMR infections globally.
